EOC Week 7: The Pitch

What do women love more than men? Heels. For my ad I am choosing to promote Christian Louboutin heels. The famous red-soled shoes are seen on the red carpet and even on the streets.  These shoes are definitely not for everyone for they are very expensive. But from celebrities to bloggers, everyone wants a pair of Louboutins. The vibrant color of the shoes really give a play on any look that you throw on. It can be mixed, matched, and styled in so many different ways.
In this ad I will be taking a picture of  a woman walking away from the camera showing off the soles of her shoes. Also pictured will be a guy with a red lipstick stain. The slogan will be “Your red lipstick won’t be the only red he’ll remember” and it plays off the fact that he thinks the woman is really sexy in her Louboutins. And even if there is a red lipstick stain on him he saw the soles of her shoes and was in awe. The shoes aren’t only for women but they are also to attract men, of course. Because what’s sexier than a girl in heels? Nothing.
This ad will set me apart from all the others because it is going to target young and fashionable women the same way Axe targets men. The ad's hidden message will basically be saying that if you're wearing Christian Louboutins, all the guys will be after you and all the guys will remember you when you leave a room because they will see the red soles of your shoes.  So it will really take a play on the Axe commercials but targeted for women on a magazine ad.

EOC Week 4: The Role Of Women In Modern Advertising

In many ads today women are viewed as sex symbols. They are usually in the center of an ad, depending on what company is advertising. And of course, they are usually dressed very provocatively with minimal or no clothes at all. This ad from Dolce & Gabbana has a girl in the middle who might depict as Queen Elizabeth and men surrounding her. The men to the right are glued to the naked queen in the middle, while the ones on the left are entertainment. These men almost look like servants for the woman. You can also notice that she is not wearing any clothes except a pair of leather knee high boots, her hair is up, and her left arm is covering her breasts as her right arm crowns one of the men. Women nowadays are a symbol of power, sex, and glamour.

Here is another ad for Alexander McQueen that exudes power.  There is a fish tank to the left with a man in his underwear, while the woman is sitting on a chair with a McQueen gown on. Again, not only are women viewed as sex symbols, but in the fashion world they are pictured as powerful couture icons. Little girls nowadays won't just see ads of sexy women but also of very edgy and chic ads of women in couture. Compared to the ads of the 60s where women were viewed as a vessel for children, a caretaker for the home, and a stepping stone for the husband, the ads of today show women in a wide variety of images. There has been a lot of changes from the past to today but also there are still some very similar things. Women are still viewed as sex symbols but to the point where it isn't the only thing we see. This goes for men in advertising as well, they are shown to be very sexy so that it appeals more to women.

Week 3 EOC: Thank You For Smoking

1. Determine the scenario: What happens in this frame?

-In this frame a couple seems to be having a lot of fun together while the guy is having an electronic cigarette.

2. What is the setting? What are the conditions?

-The setting appears to be in a field of flowers on a sunny day.

3. Who are the people or groups?

-These people are young and attractive, giving a message that people who smoke are sexy.

4. What is their point of view around this specific experience?

-Their point in this ad is that life will be happy and you will be attractive if you smoke. And with this specific brand Modern it is trying to tell people that you can smoke anywhere because it is electronic.

5. What are their goals?

-Their goal is to convince more and more people that e-cigarettes are safer even though it really is not.

6. What are their assumptions? What are their perceptions?

-The developers of this product assume that people are thinking their product is safe. That is why more and more brands of e-cigarettes are coming out.

7. Are there conflicts? Is there cooperation?

-Yes are are conflicts because when the FDA questioned these products they found that there are traces of nicotine and other chemicals.

8. What are the outcomes?

-People can still obtain second hand smoke from these products because they are induced with chemicals.

The ads of today are no different from the ads of the past. Even though it is not as abundant , they are still trying to convey the same message: buy our products and smoke. A lot of people are misinformed about electronic cigarettes, including myself. I initially thought that there would be no harmful chemicals or nicotine because companies advertise that "you can smoke anywhere" which could mean that there are no harmful chemicals. But FDA research did show traces of nicotine and chemicals in the electronic cigarettes. The way it works is liquid is heated in the product which contains nicotine and creates a vapor that imitates smoke. There are still a lot of study going on about the electronic gadgets and until then the only way to keep safe from smoking is to not smoke at all.

A big struggle in Nevada is second hand smoking. There has been a debate whether or not smoking should be banned in the casinos. I think this would be a good idea because a lot of people are getting affected by second hand smoke even if  its in certain areas. Smoke still travels to different places of the casino. Elderly, children, everyone is getting affected, not just the smokers themselves. And second hand smoke is even worse because it is not being filtered. Studies on electronic smoke might make second hand smoke a little better but people are still not sure. Nobody would be able to tell the difference between the vapors. Even the actual product itself is very similar to a real cigarette so how can anyone really tell if it is electronic or the real thing? It is almost impossible. So I say cigarettes should just be banned at casinos.
